Emergency Financial Assistance

At Catholic Charities West Virginia, our emergency assistance program is a vital part of our mission to serve people in need with compassion and dignity. The Catholic Charities emergency assistance program is designed to help individuals and families maintain stable housing and essential utility services during times of financial crisis. We recognize that even a short-term hardship—such as a job loss, medical emergency, or unexpected expense—can place someone at risk of eviction or utility shutoff.

Through this program, we offer support to West Virginia households with incomes at or below 150% of the federal poverty level. Our goal is not only to provide immediate financial relief, but also to help stabilize each family’s situation so they can begin working toward long-term solutions. We walk alongside our clients with care and respect, helping them meet their basic needs while also offering encouragement and access to additional community resources.

Catholic Charities emergency assistance services are available in many areas across the state and may include:

  • Utility bill assistance: Support to prevent disconnection of electricity, water, gas, or other vital utility services.

  • Rental assistance: Help with rent payments to avoid eviction and preserve safe, stable housing.

By addressing these urgent needs, we help families stay in their homes, keep their lights on, and preserve the dignity and security that comes with stable living conditions. Each situation is unique, and our staff members work directly with clients to assess needs, determine eligibility, and connect them with further assistance when available.

We are committed to helping vulnerable West Virginians through moments of crisis, while also promoting lasting and meaningful change.
